Animal lovers often head to a pet store when looking for a furry friend to take home. While this might seem harmless, buying pets from a shop can actually cause problems for other animals. The reasons relate to breeding.

Pet shops like to display uniquely attractive animals in their windows. To get a diverse range of cute pets in their stock, they buy animals from breeders. These professionals are able to mix breeds together in order to design the best-looking animals. Not all of these pets look as good as expected, and as a result, many of them are killed or abandoned in the street.

There are plenty of animal shelters that offer a wide variety of cats and dogs ready for adoption. Every animal that comes from a breeder leaves another one trapped in a shelter, homeless and uncared for. Additionally, animals that are bought from breeders go on to have their own kittens and puppies, creating more animals that need to be purchased or adopted.

Another problem comes from the genetic changes that occur during breeding. Breeders experiment by mixing together breeds that don’t naturally mate. This might create unique and attractive animals, but it can also cause genetic diseases that are painful and life-threatening. Some disabilities that dogs and cats might live with include going blind or deaf, developing painful problems with their hips or spines, or having ongoing heart problems.

If you’re ever in the market for a pet, please consider saving an animal from an animal shelter. You’ll find a selection of beautiful cats and dogs ready to give you love.

We often think of spies as mysterious people who live dangerous lives. So, it came as a surprise when Russian spies were found living openly in the US as American citizens. They had US passports and spoke fluent English with no trace of a foreign accent. Some of them had children who had no idea that their parents weren’t real Americans. The spies actually led fairly ordinary lives.

US intelligence agents at the FBI discovered these spies about 20 years ago. At that point in time, Russia was not seen as much of a threat. Therefore, FBI agents didn’t feel a need to arrest the Russians. Instead, the agents followed them to see what they were doing and what information they were trying to collect. The spies were only being spied upon.

For about ten years, the Russian spies weren’t able to do much except work at their regular American jobs. They were travel agents, accountants, or university researchers. They didn’t get access to any useful information, so the FBI just kept watching. However, when one spy tried to seduce a staff member in President Obama’s White House, and another one became friends with a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, the FBI made their move. In the summer of 2010, they arrested ten Russian spies. Some of their children were upset and confused, and their lives have since changed forever.

In the end, a prisoner-swap was made. The spies were sent back to their country in exchange for four American spies held by Russia. Some of their children, however, were allowed to stay.
