Reading Passage 1

 1. A title for this passage 選文 is "Berlin Divided: The Story of the Wall."

2. After World War Two (II), the reason why Germany was separated into two parts was that or because other countries couldn't agree on things, including trade issues.

3. The reason why the Berlin Wall was built was that the Soviet Union built (: set up) the Berlin Wall to prevent people from escaping from East Berlin.

4. Two parts of Berlin the capital are were different.  In West Berlin, people got free medial care and education.  However, on the other side of Berlin the capital, people had to pay for medical care and education.  Also, people in West Berlin enjoyed more freedom of trade with other countries than those in East Berlin.

Reading Passage  1

   In World War I I(: Two), Germany was defeated (: beaten) by the Allied Powers, which included the Soviet Union.  The Allies occupied (: took up) parts (: areas) of Germany after the war.  However (: Yet/Still), Western countries disagreed with (: didn’t approve of) the Soviet Union about many ideas (: notions/concepts).  This resulted in (: led to) Germany being (: ,which was) divided into West and East.

ð  During the second world war (ca. 1939-1945), Germany was beaten or conquered by the Allied Powers, including the Soviet Union.  The Allies took up areas of Germany after the war.  Yet, Western countries didn’t approve of the Soviet Union about a great number of concepts.  This led to Germany, which was cut into West and East.


Berlin, the capital (首都), was (located; situated; standing; lying) in East Germany.  However (:

Yet/Still), as (身為) part of (一份子) a peace agreement(: contract; compact), parts (: areas) of it were still considered to be in West Germany.  Things were different on each side of the city.  In West Berlin, people got paid more and businesses could trade with other countries.  Western governments helped the city rebuild.  On the other side, the Soviet Union took resources from East Berlin.  East Berliners didn’t pay for schools or medical care, but they made (: earned) less money and couldn’t trade with (貿易)the West.

Berlin were still considered to be in West German.  Things were multiple; various; diverse; different on each side of the city Berlin.  In West Berlin, people got paid more (: received much more income than those in East Berlin) and businesses(商家; 企業 enterprises, firms or companies) could trade with other countries.  Western governments helped West Berlin rebuild (: set up or establish or found repeatedly).  On the other side, by or in contrast, the Soviet Union took resources (資源) from East Berlin. East Berliners didn’t pay for schools or medical care (醫療), yet they earned less money and couldn't have a trade with the West.


Because things were worse (: bad ) in East Berlin, many people moved to West Berlin.  To prevent (:
