Hi there, I’m David O’Neill, and I’m going to give you some tips for making a great podcast.

Firstly, you have to decide what your brand is. For instance, you might want to have a podcast that’s about going to the gym. And maybe you’re also a student. So don’t call your podcast Tommy’s Gym Podcast. You should call it Getting Fit the Student’s Way. That way, you can reach the right type of listeners.

Secondly, make sure you have good sound. Don’t use your computer’s microphone because its sound quality is usually not good. Also, record your podcast in a quiet room. If you don’t have a quiet space, you can record from your closet. That’s what some great podcasters do, and it works perfectly.

My last point is about your guests. You should make your guests feel good on your show. When you introduce your guests, don’t just say, “Hey, this is Bob.” Tell your listeners who Bob is. Did he write a good book? Is he a fitness expert? Also, make sure you prepare good interview questions. This not only makes you sound smart, but your guests will also respect and trust you more. They’ll likely give better

answers, too. (Unit 7)

One of the world’s most famous podcasts is The Joe Rogan Experience. Yet if you knew its host 20 year ago, you’d never guess he’d one day be a great interviewer. Joe Rogan once had a small part on a hit American TV show in the 1990s. Later, he became a game-show host, and then a comedian. He started a podcast from his house in 2009, even though he didn’t know what he was doing. The first few shows were awful because he was only doing it for fun.

Originally, Rogan would just talk with his friends and other comedians. As his audience grew, he attracted more important guests. Politicians, scholars, and great thinkers would come on his show. These were unlikely people to talk with a comedian, but the show works because Rogan is pretty smart. However, he never changed the style of his show: no theme music, no introductions, no time limit, and no commercial breaks. Each show is a free-flowing conversation where any topic might come up.

Recently, Rogan signed a multi-million-dollar contract to move his podcast to Spotify this coming January. This service is known as a music app. With Rogan, they want to grow and become a provider of original content. Until now, Rogan has had the freedom to do his show his own way. Whether Spotify forces him to change his style remains to be seen. (Unit 7)

D 14. What can we learn about Joe Rogan from this passage?

(A) He was a talk show host around 1995.

(B) He is one of the funniest comedians in the US.

(C) His fans are not happy that he will be on Spotify.

(D) He never planned to be a serious interviewer.

B 15. What is one thing you can expect Joe Rogan to do on his show?

(A) Stop the interview because the time has run out.

(B) Start the conversation before saying who his guest is.

(C) Interrupt his guest because he has to play a commercial.

(D) Play the theme music during breaks and at the end of the show.

    16. This is Joe’s e-mail to announce the big news to his fans. Fill in the missing information.

Hey, everybody. I’m sending this e-mail to all my fans to let you know that I’m moving my podcast to Spotify. Since I started my show in 2009, it’s been available on Apple iTunes and YouTube. Starting in January (2021) / this coming January, my podcast will be only on Spotify. Thanks for listening! – Joe
