It’s impossible to actually jump into the stories that we read in
books and see in movies. But at a Human Library, you can talk to real people
who have real stories.
The Human Library is a project that started in Denmark in the year 2000.
It’s a chance for people to meet “human books” who tell their stories. These
“books” are volunteers, and they are often people who have had difficult lives.
Hearing about their experiences is more special than borrowing a real book.
If you attend a Human Library event, you can choose which “human book”
you want to “read.” Just like in a real library, you can “borrow” the book and
discover that person’s story. But instead of reading the book, you will learn
the story by actually talking and listening to another human being. It’s a
great chance for the public to meet people they wouldn’t usually get the chance
to talk with.
The Human Library exists all around the world, with events happening
in schools, neighborhood centers and real libraries. The project can teach us
that everybody should be treated equally.
